Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad; Albums.
The mighty Meat is back with the third and, according to him, final instalment of the Bat series. But fans may feel shortchanged as Bat writer Jim Steinman has penned just seven of the tracks - and the two best songs, It's All Coming Back To Me Now and Bad For Good, have been heard before on Steinman albums. The rest are co-written by producer Desmond Child who tries just a little too hard to reach Steinman's standards.
DUKE SPECIAL: Songs From The Deep Forest VERDICT: ****
Belfast boy Peter Wilson, aka Duke Special, creates his own musical world embracing vaudevillian sensibilities, singalong melodies and perfect pop hooks. And he's not afraid to let his Irish accent shine through, lending the tunes a charming lilt.
ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA: A New World Record VERDICT: *****
This was the album that made Jeff Lynne and ELO international superstars, debuting in the top 10 of every country in which it was released. Now reissued alongside 1973's On The Third Day and '75's Face The Music, there's not a duff track to be seen - and there are some gold plated classics like Telephone Line, Livin' Thing and Rockaria! And according to Jeff's new sleevenotes they were all written when he was living "in deepest Worcestershire".
DEF LEPPARD: Hysteria Deluxe Edition VERDICT: ****
Are Def Leppard still creating new music? Their last two albums have been a greatest hits collection and a selection of covers and now we have a reissue of a 20 year old record which has sold 17 million copies. But it's a goodie and this two CD deluxe version features remixes and live tracks which should satisfy com-pletists. Now, when are we getting something new?
THIRD... Meat Loaf misses the mark.
