Twin Cities Organizations to Host Live Web Event With Alan Greenspan.

To help make economics more exciting and easier to understand, the public is invited to take part in a free interactive Web event featuring Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan and a panel of top Twin Cities economic experts.

The educational Web event is in conjunction with a sold-out speech on trade and technology by Greenspan during Minnesota Meeting's annual dinner. Greenspan will speak from 7:30 to 8:05 p.m., (CDT), Thursday, Sept. 30 at the dinner, which will be held at the Minneapolis Marriot City Center.

The Web event, titled "Bringing Economics Down to Earth," will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. (CDT) that evening. Again the event is free, but participants must pre-register at www.mnmeeting.com.

"Bringing Economics down to Earth" is a joint project of Minnesota Meeting, Minnesota Public Radio (MPR), the StarTribune, Twin Cities Public Television (TCPT) and Express Interactive Solutions. Nearly an hour of special programming has been developed to supplement the address by Greenspan, with the goal of making economics -- its language, concepts and key players -- more understandable. MPR will simulcast the entire event on its network of news stations statewide and TCPT will televise Greenspan's speech and the post-speech portions of the Web event on its Twin Cities station, KTCI-Channel 17. The StarTribune is promoting the event and has taken an active role in developing it. The Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis has provided research support.

The program will focus on how Federal Reserve policy -- and economics broadly -- affects people's jobs, their investments and their future. It will be of special interest to students of economics, educators and business people -- anyone who wants to hear from Mr. Greenspan and enhance his or her own economic literacy.

Chris Farrell, co-host of MPR's Sound Money, will moderate the program surrounding the speech. The other panelists include: V.V. Chari, professor and chair of the University of Minnesota Economics Department James Paulsen, chief investment officer of Wells Capital Management Jean Kinsey, former chair of the Minneapolis Federal Reserve Bank Board of Directors and a professor of applied economics at the University of Minnesota

The online event is powered by a cutting-edge Web event technology from INTERVU Inc. called Netpodium. The technology will allow Web participants to hear Greenspan and the other speakers live through their desktop computers, with accompanying graphics and explanatory text. Web participants will also have the ability to interact with the panel of economists via text messaging and instant online polls. In addition, participants will take an online Economic Literacy Quiz throughout the program and see how they stack-up against the other participants. Mr. Greenspan's remarks will also be supported with online visuals and polls.
