Tutoring program builds self-esteem; Virginia: Winchester Public Schools.


A collaborative tutoring and mentoring program between Winchester Public Schools The Winchester Public Schools serve the city of Winchester, Virginia. The school division was founded in 1919. There are six schools and about 3500 students.

 in Winchester, Va., and nearby Shenandoah University Shenandoah University is a comprehensive Level VI private university with an enrollment of approximately 3,000 students in over 80 programs in six schools: College of Arts and Sciences, Harry F. Byrd, Jr.  is making a difference in at-risk students' approach to school.

The program was initiated as a response to the plight of at-risk children, unacceptable scores on Virginia's statewide Standards of Learning Standards of Learning or (SOL) is a program of the Commonwealth of Virginia. It sets forth learning and achievement expectations for grades K-12 in Virginia's Public Schools.  tests and parents and teachers who wanted the best for their students in terms of mentoring, tutoring and building self-esteem.

Two professors from Shenandoah University, one from the doctoral level pharmacy pharmacy, art of compounding and dispensing drugs and medication. The term is also applied to an establishment used for such purposes. Until modern times medication was prepared and dispensed by the physician himself. In the 18th cent.  school and another who teaches undergraduate math, became aware of the issues facing the schools.

The resulting public-private college program relying largely on pharmacy and math students has gained national, state and local notice with presentations at the various levels.

The program has served as a service-learning experiment for the college students and led to Winchester Public Schools being named the Virginia state winner in the 2006 National Civic Star Award competition.

Each of the Shenandoah University students committed to spend at least two hours per week for 15 weeks with assigned as·sign

 students at Daniel Morgan Middle School. The university students researched the most effective ways that younger students learn math topics and applied those concepts in their tutoring.

Collaboration with teachers on individual student needs ensured that the time spent with the middle schoolers was used to the best advantage.

Eighty percent of the at-risk seventh graders who were tutored earned a grade of C minus or higher in the math courses. Six out of 10 English as a Second Language students received passing grades, a significant increase from the previous year. On the state Standards of Learning tests, the passing rate increased by 10 percent over the previous year. The tutoring program is expected to continue and expand.
