Tutor-Saliba wins two Metro Rail contracts

Strengthening its hold on Los Angeles' biggest subway contracts, Tutor-Saliba Corp. landed two new Metro Rail construction deals worth more than $120 million earlier this month.

The Sylmar-based construction company, under a $79.8-million contract with the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County Transportation Commission, will build the Wilshire Boulevard-Normandie Avenue station and the tunnels connecting it to depots at Wilshire-Western Avenue and Wilshire-Vermont Avenue.

Separately, the company won a $44.5 million contract for subway tunnels and a below-grade, train holding area at MacArthur Park.

The two deals will give Tutor-Saliba, the only Los Angeles-based contractor to have major Metro Rail contracts, 10 subway contracts valued at nearly $440 million. Approximately 300, or about half of Tutor-Saliba's employees, are now working on local subway projects, according to according to

Asked why his company has landed so many Metro Rail deals, Tutor would say only, "the work is very complex and there are only a limited number of companies that can do this type of thing in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. ."

In January, the LACTC LACTC Los Angeles County Transportation Commission  awarded Tutor-Saliba a $53.5 million contract to build the Wilshire-Western station. In addition, the company recently finished construction of the single largest portion of the subway project to date - the $76.5 million Civic Center Station There are at least three rail stations with the name Civic Center Station:
  • Civic Center (Metrorail station), in Miami, Florida
  • Civic Center (MARTA station), in Atlanta, Georgia
  • Civic Center Station (San Francisco), in San Francisco, California
 and the adjacent tunnels linking it to Union Station, where Metro Rail Phase One will begin.

Tutor-Saliba was the contractor when a fire swept through a Metro Rail maintenance tunnel last July, creating $2.2 million in damage. Investigators concluded that the blaze was an accident, caused when a metal-cutting torch ignited ig·nite

The Wilshire-Normandie station, slated to open in April 1995, will rise across the street from the Hyatt Hotel in the 3500 block of Wilshire. The subway's $1.4 billion first leg, set to run from Union Station to Wilshire/Alvarado, will open in fall of 1993.

Tutor-Saliba, which subcontracts more than 30 percent of its subway jobs, is responsible for all construction and finishing works at the tunnels and stations, as well as mechanical, electrical and painting and landscaping.
