Turnaround in rubber consumption? (Market Focus).

The International Rubber Study Group said that for the first time in 16 months global rubber consumption increased on a month-to-month month-to-month adj. referring to a tenancy in which the tenant pays monthly rent and has no lease, and the tenancy can be terminated by the landlord at any time on thirty-days notice. (See: tenancy, landlord and tenant)  basis in April. The IRSG IRSG - Internet Research Steering Group  said the recovery was a result of increased consumption in North America North America, third largest continent (1990 est. pop. 365,000,000), c.9,400,000 sq mi (24,346,000 sq km), the northern of the two continents of the Western Hemisphere. , even though most other areas were still posting declines. World total natural and synthetic rubber synthetic rubber: see rubber.  is estimated to have increased marginally to the moving annual total of 17.7 million metric tons (Transparent Optical Networking Services) A marketing term for providing dark fiber to a customer. The customer is responsible for generating the transmission signal and interpreting it at the other end. See dark fiber. . The increase reduced the year-on-year rate of deficit to -4.2% for the month.

Despite the month-to-month increase in North America, the region still shows a year-on-year decline of around 8%, far higher than in the other major consuming regions.

The IRSG now estimates that worldwide rubber consumption for this year will be 17.2 million metric tons, almost 180,000 mt short of the total in 2001. Consumption in North America is expected to increase slightly to 3.26 mint in 2002 compared to the 3.23 mmt last year.

Rubber consumption in China is expected to surpass 2.8 mmt this year as that country continues to post increases. Consumption in 2001 totalled 2.79 mint.

In Europe Europe (yr`əp), 6th largest continent, c.4,000,000 sq mi (10,360,000 sq km) including adjacent islands (1992 est. pop. 512,000,000). , declines in France and Germany Germany (jûr`mənē), Ger. Deutschland, officially Federal Republic of Germany, republic (2005 est. pop. 82,431,000), 137,699 sq mi (356,733 sq km).  were more pronounced because of the size of the markets.

The IRSG said that the only factor that may threaten the promising outlook for rubber consumption is the movement in oil prices. Since reaching a low of $17 per barrel barrel: see English units of measurement.  in November November: see month. , 2001, prices have risen steadily to $28 per barrel in April. The IRSG sees this as leading to inflation and reduced consumer spending Consumer demand or consumption is also known as personal consumption expenditure. It is the largest part of aggregate demand or effective demand at the macroeconomic level. .
