For many people with disabilities, maintaining friendships with individuals other than family members, treatment providers, and others with disabilities presents a challenge. Many of these individuals are socially isolated because of a lack of finances or transportation, a fear of technology, or impaired social skills.

For this group of individuals, the Internet in general, and WebTV specifically, can be a wonderful resource, eliminating the barrier of appearance and concentrating upon one's ability to express oneself through writing. WebTV is a system of Internet access that utilizes a television, phone line, remote control, and an optional keyboard. The mouse, which can present a barrier for those with impaired eye-hand coordination, is eliminated.

Prospective users must first contact an Internet provider to establish a monthly subscription service. Once hookup is complete, an on-screen tutorial guides the user painlessly through cyberspace.
