SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 14, 2000

TurboLinux, Inc., the high-performance Linux company, today announced availability of the fifth upgrade of its IA-64 Linux distribution that includes the world's first IA-64 port of Helixcode's GNOME gnome (nōm), in folklore, tiny subterranean creature associated with mines and quarries. Usually represented as misshapen, frequently as hunchbacked, gnomes are said to be guardians of hidden treasures.  desktop and other enhancements to optimize performance on Intel(R) Itanium(TM) processor-based server and workstation systems. TurboLinux, which was the first company to make a complete IA-64 Linux distribution available to developers last March, code named its most recent release "Firecracker" and includes the Helix Code GNOME desktop, the 2.4..0-test1 + 0621 patch kernel for Linux, updated kernel RPMs, Netscape installation by default, early support for kernel modules and popular developer programs such as gnapster and xmms.

Miguel de Icaza was born in Mexico City and studied at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) but never received a degree.

The TurboLinux release is based on the kernel and tools developed by the IA-64 Linux Project, formerly known as the Trillian project, a group of companies that include TurboLinux, Caldera caldera: see crater.
