Tucson City Council.
In what may become a familiar scene around the country, the Tucson
City Council has voted to require annual criminal background checks of
ice cream truck drivers. Under the new law, which goes into effect in
April, ice cream truck vendors would be required to submit to
fingerprinting and criminal background checks every year in order to get
a license. The city would deny a license if the applicant has been
convicted of a misdemeanor sex offense in the previous five years or has
ever been convicted of a felony sex offense. The licenses would cost
$50. The vote followed upon reports from several cities regarding
inappropriate and even illegal behavior towards children by drivers of
ice cream trucks.
