Tuba teacher makes debut.

Concerts introducing a new tuba tuba (t`bə) [Lat.,=trumpet], valved brass wind musical instrument of wide conical bore.  professor, celebrating chamber music composed by Nazi concentration camp prisoners and featuring the music and dance of Ghana are scheduled this week at the University of Oregon The University of Oregon is a public university located in Eugene, Oregon. The university was founded in 1876, graduating its first class two years later. Michael Grose, the music school's new tuba professor, will perform at 8 p.m. Monday in Beall Concert Hall. Tickets, available at the door, will be $7 for general admission and $4 for students and senior citizens.

Grose's program will include both transcriptions and original works for tuba, including Suite for Tuba by Don Haddad, Nocturne nocturne (nŏk`tûrn) [Fr.,=night piece], in music, romantic instrumental piece, free in form and usually reflective or languid in character. John Field wrote the first nocturnes, influencing Chopin in the writing of his 19 nocturnes for piano.  in E-flat by Frederic Chopin, Sonata for Tuba by Paul Hindemith, Concerto for Bass Tuba by Ralph Vaughan Williams Noun 1. Ezra Bartz, a UO student majoring in piano performance, will be the accompanist.

Third Angle, a Portland-based New Music ensemble, will present "Music of Terezin: Sparks of Glory" at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Beall Hall. Tickets, available at the door, will be $7 for general admission and $4 for students and senior citizens.

From 1941 to 1944, prisoners of the Theresienstadt concentration camp Concentration camp Theresienstadt (often referred to as Terezín) was a Nazi concentration camp during World War II. It was established by the Gestapo in the fortress and garrison city of Terezín (German name Theresienstadt), located in what is now the Czech Republic.  in Terezin, Czechoslovakia, created works of art while living in circumstances best described as inhuman. As part of Expressions of Human Dignity Month, Third Angle will play some of this chamber music, including works by Victor Ullmann, Gideon Klein and Pavel Haas.

The ensemble also will play Paul Schoenfield's "Sparks of Glory," narrated by Portland actress Michele Mariana.

Obo Addy and Okropong will present the music and dance of Ghana at 8 p.m. Friday in Beall Hall. Tickets, available at the door, are $10 for general admission and $8 for students and senior citizens.

Addy and his group also will do a free lecture-demonstration at 2 p.m. Friday in the Dougherty Dance Theatre on the third floor of the Gerlinger Annex, 1484 University St.

Obo Addy learned the traditional drumming and singing of the Ga culture of Ghana Ghana is a country of 22 million people comprising over 60 ethnic groups. Fifty two major languages and hundreds of dialects are spoken in Ghana, and English, the official language of Ghana, is spoken by many.  at an early age. He plays the full range of West African master drums, supporting drums, xylophones and other percussion instruments.
