Trusted Information Systems enhances industry leading Gauntlet Internet Firewall.

GLENWOOD, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 23, 1996--Trusted Information Systems Inc. (TIS), a leading provider of computer, network and communications security software and services, today announced the availability of Gauntlet(TM) Internet Firewall Version 3.1. The Gauntlet Internet Firewall is a secure internetwork gateway providing complete protection from unauthorized Internet and intranet traffic. Version 3.1 includes secure Web and FTP servers integrated in the firewall; secure POP3 email and line printer services for remote and mobile workers; and remote, GUI-based management software.

The Gauntlet Internet Firewall is the industry's fastest and most secure application gateway firewall," said Fred Avolio, vice president of network product marketing at TIS. "With an increasing number of corporations looking to fully leverage the capability of the Internet, users are demanding a comprehensive solution to the security challenge. In response, Version 3.1 of the Gauntlet Internet Firewall now offers a number of key new features that enable companies to fully exploit the Internet for information dissemination and collaboration. With secure Web and FTP servers integrated in the firewall, companies can more safely deploy information servers, while secure POP mail and printer services for remote access enable companies to create virtual private networks and virtual network perimeters that extend to mobile workers."

The Gauntlet Firewall provides a secure information server environment by putting Web and FTP servers on the firewall rather than behind it. This approach minimizes unauthorized access, both through the firewall itself or from unauthorized users who entered the network from a different point.

Ideal for small-to-midsized sites that can host their Web or FTP server on the same system as the firewall, the Gauntlet Firewall now enables companies to provide Web and file services in the most secure method available. With the Gauntlet Firewall, all traffic must be approved by the firewall, all communication between two networks is turned off, and network services are individually enabled through application data bridges. These bridges, or proxy servers, act as special applications that insulate an organization's internal TCP/IP TCP/IP

network traffic from outside traffic. At the same time, TIS is working with commercial Web server companies to improve the security of larger volume Web server installations.

The Gauntlet Internet Firewall Version 3.1 also acts as an email gateway and POP3 mail server, allowing mobile users to send and receive secure email with minimal disruption. Additionally, telecommuters can securely access printers on the corporate network from home, thus extending the virtual network perimeter. This announcement reinforces TIS's support for industry standards and its objective of continually enhancing its range of application services. The Gauntlet Internet Firewall also supports terminal service (TELNET A terminal emulation protocol used on the Internet and TCP/IP-based networks.
