Trillium Digital Systems Inc. Announces Industry's First Broadband-to-Narrowband Interworking Function Platform Software.

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 18, 1997--Trillium Digital Systems Inc., a leading provider of communications software solutions, Tuesday announced the release and shipment of the industry's first portable Broadband-to-Narrowband Interworking (standard) interworking - Systems or components, possibly from different origins, working together to perform some task. Interworking depends crucially on standards to define the interfaces between the components.  Function Platform source code software product.

Trillium's new Broadband-to-Narrowband Interworking Function Platform software will enable interoperability between equipment deployed in different types of networks, which are often based on different standards.

Much of today's telephony network is based on narrowband technologies such as Signaling System 7 (SS7) and circuit switching. In contrast, broadband networks, currently used primarily for data, are based on technologies such as Asynchronous Transfer Mode See ATM.

(communications) Asynchronous Transfer Mode - (ATM, or "fast packet") A method for the dynamic allocation of bandwidth using a fixed-size packet (called a cell).

"The growth of the Internet and the widespread use of wireless technologies have increased the need for broadband-to-narrowband integration," Dr. Jerome Krasner, director of telecommunications for Venture Development Corp., said. "As these technologies converge, interworking becomes a fundamental requirement. Trillium provides a solution to make this successful convergence possible for communications networks."

Trillium President and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  Jeff Lawrence said: "Trillium's broad product line and leading position in the industry enabled us to anticipate the convergence of the data and telephony networks early on. We recognized that communications equipment manufacturers would have to provide interworking capabilities in their products to remain competitive. In the future, new technologies and applications will create even more interworking requirements.

"Trillium is in a strong position to provide interworking solutions because of our expertise in many of the communications technologies, such as ATM, SS7, ISDN ISDN

(Integrated Services Digital Networks) and Frame Relay. Our new Broadband-to-Narrowband Interworking Function Platform software product is only the beginning of our efforts to provide our customers with these solutions."

The Trillium-designed Broadband-to-Narrowband Interworking Function Platform software enables interoperability between equipment deployed in different types of networks, which are often based on different standards.

For example, the American National Standards Institute See ANSI.

(body, standard) American National Standards Institute - (ANSI) The private, non-profit organisation (501(c)3) responsible for approving US standards in many areas, including computers and communications. ANSI is a member of ISO.
(ANSI (American National Standards Institute, New York, www.ansi.org) A membership organization founded in 1918 that coordinates the development of U.S. voluntary national standards in both the private and public sectors. It is the U.S. member body to ISO and IEC. ) and the International Telecommunications Union See ITU.

(body, standard) International Telecommunications Union - (ITU) ITU-T, the telecommunication standardisation sector of ITU, is responsible for making technical recommendations about telephone and data (including fax) communications systems for PTTs and suppliers.
(ITU (International Telecommunication Union, Geneva, Switzerland, www.itu.ch) A telecommunications standards body that is under the auspices of the United Nations. Comprising more than 185 member countries, the ITU sets standards for global telecom networks. ) define separate standards for telecommunications and networking equipment that will eventually need to interoperate with each other.

Trillium's Broadband-to-Narrowband Interworking Function Platform software product consists of Trillium's SS7 and ATM protocol stacks together with the industry's first portable Broadband Call Control (BCC (Blind Carbon Copy) The field in an e-mail header that names additional recipients for the message. It is similar to carbon copy (cc), but the names do not appear in the recipient's message. Not all e-mail systems support the bcc feature. See fcc. ) software product, which provides interworking between Broadband -- ISDN User Part The ISDN User Part or ISUP is part of the Signaling System #7 which is used to set up telephone calls in Public Switched Telephone Networks. It is specified by the ITU-T as part of the Q.76x series, ANSI (T1.113-YEAR) and Telcordia former Bellcore GR-246 series.  (B-ISUP B-ISUP Broadband ISDN User Part (also seen as BISUP) ) and ISUP (ISDN User Part) See SS7. . The initial release of this product supports ANSI-to-ITU interworking. Future releases will support interworking between ITU-to-ANSI and other combinations.

Trillium provides its Broadband-to-Narrowband Interworking Function Platform software as a portable or integrated product. In the integrated solution, Trillium's software runs on a distributed platform consisting of a Sun workstation, Sbus cards and intelligent VME bus cards. The portable software used in the integrated solution can be ported to any other platform.
