Trillium Digital Systems, Inc., the leading provider of communications software solutions, announced the availability and first shipment of a VTOA (Voice-Trunking-over-ATM) protocol software solution that enables narrowband-to-broadband network convergence, increases efficiency in network management and enables services such as virtual private networks (VPNs). Enhanced with an interworking functionality, Trillium's VTOA software solution offers communications equipment suppliers a reliable and cost-effective path to the converged network of the future.

Trillium's VTOA product allows suppliers of ATM networking equipment, edge switches and multi-service devices to support the transport of PSTN voice, data and signalling over a broadband ATM network backbone. The VTOA software is integrated into networking equipment used at the edge of an ATM network to establish connections and manage the flow of PSTN traffic. The networking equipment then acts as a tandem switch connecting a large number of end-office private branch exchanges (PBXs) and enabling switching between them. VTOA creates &uot;tunnels&uot; that serve as pathways for PSTN call characteristics through the ATM network.
