The Civil War leaves Corrine orphaned and at the mercy of her mother's brother. Her grief mixes with curiosity when she discovers her uncle to be in possession of her mother's trunk. Against his wishes, she opens it, finding a portrait of an unknown woman and a monk's letters from the 13th and 14th centuries describing his dealings with the Fey. When the Fey begin to communicate with Corrine, her uncle tries to protect her by sending her to a reformatory school for girls who share Corrine's ability to interact with other worldly beings.
