This Craftsman Bungalow bungalow [Indian bangla,=house], dwelling built in a style developed from that of a form of rural house in India. The original bungalow typically has one story, few rooms, and a maximum of cross drafts, with high ceilings, unusually large window and door  in Atlanta's West End Historic District was originally built in 1918, and last year it was gutted to the studs and refinished with a modern interior. "The new trend is traditional (or historic) on the outside, modern on the inside. I didn't know I was following this trend; I just thought it was a great deal and knew I could make it into a showcase home for my work," designer/builder ToNi Nue told us. West End Historic District is a neighborhood in transition; historically, it was the home of Atlanta's well-to-do black population. It's eight minutes from downtown and a stone's throw stone's throw

from million dollar homes on Cascade Road. "One of the challenges of working in this area is the cloud of investor fraud that seems to be lifting. There are beautiful homes there, but because so many have been bought and flipped, it's a challenge to get a true evaluation of a home's worth," she said. Being a certified Earthcraft home has help set this one apart.

There were many green building principals applied throughout this renovation. Bamboo flooring Bamboo floors are manufactured from the bamboo plant. The majority of today's bamboo flooring products originate in China and other portions of Asia. The species of bamboo used for flooring is commonly known as "Moso".  was used because it costs about the same as other hardwoods, but the plants rapidly re-grow after harvest. The old oak floors and leftover drywall were ground into mulch mulch, any material, usually organic, that is spread on the ground to protect the soil and the roots of plants from the effects of soil crusting, erosion, or freezing; it is also used to retard the growth of weeds.  and tilled into the backyard before seeding. In six to eight months, it will have disintegrated--earth to earth. Low-VOC paints were used throughout the house.

They right-sized the HVAC (Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning) In the home or small office with a handful of computers, HVAC is more for human comfort than the machines. In large datacenters, a humidity-free room with a steady, cool temperature is essential for the trouble-free  system by performing a computer analysis to determine the necessary size of the HVAC unit based on square footage of the home and the fact that the house is airtight air·tight

where the temperature is controlled so that those appliances don't have to work so hard to do their jobs. Georgia Energy Code has made energy efficient windows a must, and so Window World windows were used because they have better technology and higher ratings for their price range than other manufacturers. The builder used to represent Icynene spray insulation systems in Europe, so she decided to use it in this new home. But this provided another building challenge. The rough-in inspector wasn't familiar with icynene spray foam insulation, so before he would issue approval to continue, she had to explain the concept of sealing the home airtight, submit technical information on the product, and supply the name of an inspector who was already familiar with the concept and the product.

"Americans are using more than our fair share of the earth's resources. That's why I'm committed to building sustainably whenever I can," said ToNi. Through residential construction and Design/Build renovations, she found a way to conjoin her concern for the environment with her desires to create and to serve in a meaningful way. This was an investment property, but she didn't want to do a cheap renovation. She wanted to create a home she would love to live in and green was a natural choice.
