The virus experts at Trend stress that only a few cases of the Hare Krishna virus have been reported. "We don't expect a huge number of incidents from this virus," said Eva Chen Eva Chen is a relationship columnist editor.

, director of research and development for Trend. "But we still want to get the word out that users should take the simple, no-cost precaution of downloading our free virus scanner and running it on their machines."

Joe Wells, author and virus expert, agrees the virus will not be widespread. "It is not likely to spread from your own computer because if you get the virus, your computer won't last long enough to be able to share files with other users," he said. "But it can be easily detected with a virus scanner."

The virus is contracted through the Internet. Because e-mail and Web traffic has recently become the most common pathway Common pathway

These precautions can dramatically reduce the risk associated with receiving e-mail attachments or downloading executable files from the World Wide Web.

"Users don't have to be afraid of the Internet or e-mail," said Chen. "A good anti-virus software product, when kept up to date, will keep you safe from most viruses."
