Trend Micro Ships InterScan AppletTrap -- Enterprise Java and ActiveX Security Software.

CUPERTINO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 23, 1999--

Patent-Pending Solution Minimizes Performance Problems of

Competing Products; Offers Policy-Based Central

Management and Intelligent Updates

Trend Micro Inc., the leader in centrally managed virus protection and content filtering See Web filtering and parental control software.  products and services, today announced shipment of their new product that stops malicious Java applets, JavaScript, and ActiveX objects at the Internet gateway (1) See cable/DSL gateway.

(2) A router or server that converts IP packets to IPX, AppleTalk or some other non-IP format and vice versa. It is used to connect non-IP networks to the Internet.
, and solves the performance and management issues that have hindered competing approaches.

Malicious or Java applets, JavaScript and ActiveX objects downloaded unknowingly by end-users can steal, delete or modify information and compromise corporate security. In addition, "buggy" applets can hinder performance and needlessly consume network bandwidth.

Trend Micro's InterScan AppletTrap(TM) allows network administrators to centrally manage Java, ActiveX and JavaScript code security from a web proxy server Also called a "proxy," it is a computer system or router that breaks the connection between sender and receiver. Functioning as a relay between client and server, proxy servers are used to help prevent an attacker from invading the private network.  with intelligent policy-based software. InterScan AppletTrap provides real-time behavior analysis of Java applets and includes intelligent updating that recognizes new threats and automatically adds them to a "block" list of undesirable applets.

Trend Micro's Unique Approach

Trend Micro's patent-pending approach allows InterScan AppletTrap to be installed at the web proxy server level, but for analysis of applets to occur at the desktop thus minimizing server performance costs. Simply put, while the Java applet is at the server, InterScan AppletTrap automatically attaches special code to each applet that instructs the client computer as to acceptable or unacceptable behavior.

These applets are completely "wrapped" to ensure that malicious code can do no damage. If malicious code is found, the "wrapped" applet is shut down, leaving the desktop unaffected. No software is installed on the desktop. All policy instructions are managed from the server.

This innovative solution provides easy installation on the server while utilizing the power of distributed computing (1) The use of multiple computers networked throughout a wide geographical area, or the world via the Internet, in order to solve a single problem. See grid computing.

(2) The use of multiple computers in an enterprise rather than one centralized system.
to minimize server load. The result is real-time behavior analysis with minimal performance cost.

This is a superior solution compared with server-based products offered by competitors, which may rely on performance-intensive emulation environments, or with client-side-only solutions that are difficult to deploy and manage and can suffer from browser incompatibility issues.

Trend Micro's approach to securing Java and ActiveX was given the highest ranking of four stars in a Forrester Research Forrester Research is an independent technology and market research company that provides its clients with advice about technology's impact on business and consumers. "They call for innovative solutions that don't become a burden to the administrator or the Internet gateway. InterScan AppletTrap is the first truly manageable solution to Java/ActiveX security that doesn't turn the server into a bottleneck."

InterScan AppletTrap provides three comprehensive levels of security: -0-

1. Certificate Verification -- Java and ActiveX certificates are
filtered and verified before being admitted through the Internet
gateway. The administrator may filter applets and objects either
by identifying the trusted partner sending the code or by the
certificating organization, such as VeriSign (Nasdaq:VRSN).
Applications from trusted partners can be re-signed at the server
with the company's own certificate, streamlining the application
     certificate management process.

2. Known Malicious Code Filter -- Using a similar approach to
traditional virus checking methods, AppletTrap will compare code
to known malicious pattern samples. AppletTrap can regularly
update its malicious code list from Trend Micro's web site. This
list is updated by Trend Micro's team of researchers.

3. Unknown Applet Filter -- Administrators may guard against unknown
malicious applets by selecting from a list of pre-written
policies or by customizing policies for their enterprise.
AppletTrap shuts down an applet that breaks a policy and its
unique intelligent updating service automatically adds the
applet's identifying patterns to the list of undesirable applets
that are blocked from entering the network at the server.
AppletTrap can be configured to automatically upload the applet's
pattern to Trend Micro's research team to be analyzed and
included in subsequent updates supporting the known malicious
     code filter.
