Trend Micro Announces First E-Mail Virus Protection For HP-UX; Also Scans Web and FTP Traffic.

CUPERTINO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 27, 1996--Trend Micro Incorporated, a leader in server-based virus protection, today announced it has ported its InterScan VirusWall virus protection software to Hewlett Packard Company's enterprise-class UNIX operating system Noun 1.  -- the first virus protection available for this platform.

InterScan VirusWall for HP-UX is a three-in-one product that scans viruses in real time in e-mail attachments, HTTP HTTP

Standard application-level protocol used for exchanging files on the World Wide Web. HTTP runs on top of the TCP/IP protocol.
 files and FTP FTP
 in full file transfer protocol

Internet protocol that allows a computer to send files to or receive files from another computer. Like many Internet resources, FTP works by means of a client-server architecture; the user runs client software to connect to
traffic. Each of the three product components can be installed on an individual dedicated server, or all together on one server, allowing great flexibility and scalability for small to large networks.

As a leading UNIX operating system, HP-UX provides a highly reliable, standards-based foundation to run and manage business-critical solutions. InterScan VirusWall provides advanced virus detection to catch viruses at the server, and keep them away from end users.

InterScan VirusWall for HP-UX employs intelligent scanning for improved performance. Only files capable of carrying a virus are scanned. The system administrator may also restrict scanning by file types.

InterScan for HP-UX detects known and unknown viruses in attachments to e-mail messages, including Word macro viruses, and was specifically designed for HP-UX version 10.x. A version of InterScan VirusWall that will work for both HP-UX 9.x and 10.x is scheduled for an early 1997 release.

"E-mail traffic bypasses traditional anti-virus software anti-virus software nAntivirensoftware f  and has become a primary source of virus infection ever since macro viruses were created," said Eva Chen Eva Chen is a relationship columnist editor.

"Internet gateway- or SMTP-based protection stops viruses early and keeps them away from the end-user. And the responsibility for maintaining the most up-to-date virus detecting software and patterns is in the hands of a professional -- the system administrator."

InterScan VirusWall for HP-UX can be installed directly on the HP-UX gateway machine or on a proxy server, and requires no additional hardware. Intranet traffic can also be scanned if SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) The standard e-mail protocol on the Internet and part of the TCP/IP protocol suite, as defined by IETF RFC 2821. SMTP defines the message format and the message transfer agent (MTA), which stores and forwards the mail.  is used for inter-departmental communications.

Product features include: automatic, real-time scanning real-time scanning

whenever a new message arrives at the server, immediate notification of the sender, recipient and administrator of virus incidents; and automatic and pre-scheduled virus pattern updates via the Internet.

InterScan VirusWall makes it easy to track the source of virus infections with an extensive reporting format that tells the user and system administrator the name of the virus found, the name of the infected attachment, sender of the infected file and the action taken on the infected file.

InterScan VirusWall for HP-UX scans seven types of compressed files (PKZip, PKLite, Diet, MS Compress, LZExe, ARJ A compression program for backup archiving from ARJ Software, Inc., Norwood, MA (www.arjsoftware.com). Introduced in the early 1990s and created by Robert Jung (the RJ in ARJ), ARJ never achieved the popularity of PKZIP, although it is considered a worthy competitor. InterScan VirusWall for HP-UX is the latest in a series of product releases and licensing arrangements announced by Trend Micro this year that focus on the Internet and e-mail virus threat.

Trend Micro pioneered server-based Intranet virus protection with the release last spring of InterScan VirusWall for Solaris and Windows NT, featuring technology that has since been licensed to Netscape Communications Corp., Sun Microsystems and e-mail vendors to protect their customers from Internet-borne viruses.

Trend also developed the only anti-virus application currently available for the Microsoft Proxy Server, InterScan WebProtect, which protects networks from Web browsing and downloads. Next month, Trend Micro will release ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange, which scans and cleans e-mail attachments of viruses. Trend plans to release equivalent products for Lotus Notes and Novell's GroupWise early in 1997.

InterScan VirusWall for HP-UX is scheduled to ship in mid-December and will be sold both directly and through Trend's worldwide distribution and reseller network. The price of $1,495 for a 50-user license includes one year of free virus pattern updates. For details send e-mail to sales@trendmicro.com.
