With full support of the new Microsoft VS API 2.0 and Windows 2000 Advanced Server, ScanMail for Exchange 2000 V5.1 now has access to all email properties, such as the sender, recipient, administrator, and subject, for enhanced notification and reporting capabilities. This advanced feature helps administrators quickly put a stop to new virus threats by enabling them to compile consolidated reporting and logging files detailing the virus incidents across their Exchange 2000 environment.

"We're thrilled that Trend Micro is providing Exchange customers with improved virus protection through its support of our new VS API," said Kevin McCuistion, Exchange group product manager at Microsoft Corp. "We understand that security is of paramount importance to Exchange customers and we are confident that ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange 2000 will protect the integrity of their e-mail communications."

"We found Trend Micro's ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange 2000 with SP1 support to provide complete protection against viruses and other malicious content threats coming into or leaving the Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, without impacting performance, as a result of its memory-scanning capabilities," said Cary Shufelt, Systems Engineer at Oregon State University Oregon State University, at Corvallis; land-grant and state supported; coeducational; chartered 1858 as Corvallis College, opened 1865. In 1868 it was designated Oregon's land-grant agricultural college and was taken over completely by the state in 1885. . "Also, we work very closely with Microsoft and we found that Trend Micro's products tightly integrate with the Exchange 2000 environment and use the virus-scanning API endorsed by Microsoft. It would have been an issue, not to mention a big unknown, for us to have chosen a solution that was not recommended by Microsoft. I strongly believe we have decided to go down the better path."

New ScriptTrap Technology

Trend Micro also announced today that it has further enhanced its virus detection capabilities in ScanMail for Exchange 2000 V5.1, and across the entire product line, by incorporating Trend Micro's ScriptTrap(TM) technology into the company's virus scanning engine. Following the lead of Trend Micro's MacroTrap(R) technology, ScriptTrap is a module within the standard scan engine that identifies harmful scripts based on what they do, rather than how they are written. This virus scanning technique is known as heuristic A method of problem solving using exploration and trial and error methods. Heuristic program design provides a framework for solving the problem in contrast with a fixed set of rules (algorithmic) that cannot vary.

scanning and has become an increasingly necessary component of effective virus detection and elimination because viruses themselves have become more sophisticated.

The functionality enables Trend Micro's antivirus products to detect unknown script viruses generically and enhances the company's existing ability to manage polymorphic polymorphic - polymorphism  script viruses. Script viruses are becoming more popular among virus writers and Trend Micro's ScriptTrap can identify these types of viruses even when traditional pattern file detection is not available.

"Viruses and other malicious code carried by email through corporate firewalls can cause tremendous damage to organizations of all sizes in terms of lost information and time spent getting systems running again," said Mark Levitt, research director for Collaborative Computing at IDC. "Antivirus solutions like Trend Micro's ScanMail for Exchange 2000 play a critical role in protecting against harmful emails transmitted by a variety of protocols."
