The organization was established in 1875 as the American Forestry Association, by physician/horticulturist John Aston Warder and a group of like-minded citizens
 to plant trees to restore forests and offset C[O.sub.2] emissions.

IKEA is already partnering with AMERICAN FORESTS to offset the annual C[O.sub.2] emissions produced by IKEA coworkers and visitors who drive to the stores each year. IKEA estimates each store will plant about 33,100 trees annually. The trees will be planted in AMERICAN FORESTS' Global ReLeaf tree-planting projects. These projects restore forests damaged by human or natural causes. IKEA North America North America, third largest continent (1990 est. pop. 365,000,000), c.9,400,000 sq mi (24,346,000 sq km), the northern of the two continents of the Western Hemisphere.  has worked with AMERICAN FORESTS through its Global ReLeaf tree planting program for 10 years, planting more than 500,000 trees in environmental restoration projects.
