The program begins with the two narrators presenting an overview of the basic anatomy anatomy (ənăt`əmē), branch of biology concerned with the study of body structure of various organisms, including humans. What many do not realize is that terms are made up by anybody and everybody in a nonchalant, casual manner without any regard or  and effective graphics for ease of understanding. , standing posture, and lifting techniques follow. The use of examples from various work activities is effective in making the descriptions applicable. This background information is important for a patient to have in order to understand the value and purpose of the exercise program.

The second part of the videotape introduces the patient to the self-treatment program. The narrators demonstrate each exercise, as well as give a thorough description of how to perform each exercise. The camera shots are filmed at appropriate angles to project a clear understanding of each exercise. The patient is instructed how and when to progress with the exercise protocol and is given the anticipated results.

This videotape is clearly designed to be used by patients in dealing with their neck or back pain. It serves as an excellent complement to the instructional books by Robin McKenzie, Treat Your Own Back and Treat Your Own Neck. The videotape provides excellent detail and comprehensive information on how to treat disorders A

. The use of routine activities as examples reinforces the information given. The emphasis on the active role patients must play in treating their pain through posture awareness and compliance with the exercises is an important aspect of this patient education tool. The quality of the videotape is excellent with regard to lighting and sound, resulting in a very professional presentation.

I recommend this video for any health care professional involved in treating patients who have disorders of the spine. It would also be a useful educational medium for physical therapists and physical therapy students learning the McKenzie approach to back and neck care.
