BOTHELL, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 14, 1998--

--Next-Generation LapLink is first to Support USB USB
 in full Universal Serial Bus

Type of serial bus that allows peripheral devices (disks, modems, printers, digitizers, data gloves, etc.) to be easily connected to a computer.
, Fast Infrared and Windows 98--

Delivering on its promise to provide the most efficient remote access solutions, Traveling Software Inc. today announced LapLink Professional, the next-generation of LapLink 7.5.

LapLink Professional is now the market's fastest, most flexible and easiest-to-use solution for mobile professionals and telecommuters, enabling users to remotely access, control and transfer files to and from their office PCs with the greatest speed and superior usability, reducing their time on task.

Building on Traveling Software's patented remote access technology, LapLink Professional supplements the award-winning LapLink 7.5 features with first-to-market USB cable support. Now users can connect two computers at network-like speeds of up to 6 megabits per second (unit) megabits per second - (Mbps, Mb/s) Millions of bits per second. A unit of data rate. 1 Mb/s = 1,000,000 bits per second (not 1,048,576).

E.g. Ethernet can carry 10 Mbps.
, many times faster than the 500-800 kilobits per second (unit) kilobits per second - (kbps, kb/s) A unit of data rate where 1 kb/s = 1000 bits per second. This contrasts with units of storage where 1 Kb = 1024 bits (note upper case K).  of traditional file transfer products.

LapLink Professional is also the first remote access product optimized for Windows 98. LapLink Professional takes advantage of Windows 98 features -- allowing users to expand their desktop onto multiple monitors, making a large virtual desktop, and allowing them to schedule a file transfer using the Task Scheduler This article is about the scheduled tasks component in Windows. Other major enhancements include support for the leading Windows platforms (98, NT 4.0, 95, 3.1) in one box and a free CE client via the web, connection via Fast Infrared (FIR) and print redirection.

"For over a decade, LapLink has been recognized by users around the world as the benchmark for remote file transfer and remote control," said Kevin Bohren, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Industry-Leading Features Packed into Award-Winning Product

Since its introduction, LapLink has been lauded as the best communications software (communications, software) communications software - Application programs, operating system components, and probably firmware, forming part of a communication system. These different software components might be classified according to the functions within the Open Systems  available both for usability and its powerful remote access capabilities. LapLink Professional continues this tradition enabling on-the-go professionals to experience the benefits of being on a corporate network, while working away from the office. All of its features are designed to simplify and speed remote access for mobile workers, offering the most automated, easy-to-use tools that reduce time on task. Wizards that walk users through system setup and task performance, simultaneous host/guest mode, one-click connections, adaptive compression A data compression technique that dynamically adjusts the algorithm used based on the content of the data being compressed.  and an Xchange Agent to schedule file transfers to run unattended are just some of the reasons that LapLink Professional is the smart choice for mobile professionals and telecommuters. Major new features in LapLink Professional include:

-- First remote access software to support USB: With the LapLink USB

cable (see pricing and availability below), two computers can connect at network-like speeds of up to 6 megabits per second, many times faster than the 500-800 kilobits per second of traditional file transfer products. It's up to five times faster than the LapLink parallel cable and up to seven times faster than the LapLink serial cable.

-- Support for Fast Infrared: This capability is important to the

growing number of mobile users with new notebook computers. LapLink now offers complete connectivity over modem, cables (USB, parallel, serial), Internet, IPX (Internetwork Packet EXchange) The network layer protocol in the NetWare operating system. LapLink Professional is the only remote access product on the market today with features designed exclusively for Windows 98.

-- Windows 98 Multiple Monitor Support: If you have more than one monitor and video card, users can expand their Windows 98 desktop onto multiple monitors, making a large virtual desktop. This is a great feature if you use remote control frequently, because LapLink Professional can display another Windows desktop on a secondary monitor while another program runs on the primary monitor. All of LapLink Professional's remote control features work when running LapLink on a secondary monitor, including full screen mode.

-- Support for Windows 98 scheduler program for Xchange Agent: LapLink Professional's Xchange Agent program can now schedule file and folder synchronization (1) See synchronous and synchronous transmission.
