Senate OKs passport deadline extension. Americans may not have to show passports to re-enter the U.S. after visits to Mexico and Canada until at least June 1, 2009, after the Senate voted Wednesday to extend the deadline. The bill, part of the immigration reform legislation Congress has been debating, has not yet become law. May 19, 2006

US releases long-awaited air cargo security regulation. The US government's final rule on air cargo security was issued this week after three years of debate and revision, marking the first major change to the regulations since 1999. May 19, 2006

Three more airports get "gateway" status. El Al

El Al requests second baggage screening at Newark airport. El Al has asked the Transportation Security Administration for permission to screen its own baggage at Newark Liberty International Airport. The airline already conducts second screenings at four airports. Critics say El Al's request is a vote of no confidence in the TSA. May 15, 2006
