The US Department of Transportation released statistics this week showing that 68.1% of flights in June landed on time. When asked about airports in the Northeast being particularly affected by delays, a Delta spokesman said, "We continue to note the Northeast is particularly hampered by the antiquated [air traffic control] system, as well as disproportionate corporate jet traffic." Aug 10, 2007 Airlines are arguing that flight delays will worsen if Congress fails to fund ATC system modernization. Commercial carriers and their passengers provide more than 90% of the taxes that fund the system, yet they consume closer to 74% of the costs of running it, the FAA estimates. Airlines arguing for a change in how the system is funded have released an advertising campaign calling for the end of corporate jet subsidies by commercial airline passengers. FAA Administrator Marion Blakey Marion Clifton Blakey (born March 26, 1948) was the 15th Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration. FAA Administrator Marion Blakey calls for a move to a satellite-based ATC system in order to handle more traffic in a more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly way that also has an extra margin of safety. "Right now what's happening is that you find that the commercial carriers are paying more than the cost that their requirements imply," Blakey said. She also notes that business jets are paying relatively little into the system. Aug 8, 2007 Barco, NCS (Network Call Signaling) CableLabs version of MGCP. See MGCP/MEGACO. Aug 10, 2007 Southwest Airlines Air traffic control and funding need updating. A Southwest Airlines in-flight magazine article says there is no doubt that the U.S.'s 1950s-era air traffic control system is overburdened by the need to juggle too many planes in limited airspace and that the passenger headaches caused by congestion and delays are only going to get worse. An updated, satellite-based air traffic control system will solve the problem and pay dividends for the environment by allowing planes to fly shorter, more direct routes to their destinations. The update in technology needs to be accompanied by updated funding methods: Commercial passengers have long subsidized corporate jets, and it's time to correct that by charging everyone for the resources they use.
