Carriers turn to fuel efficiency to fight global warming global warming, the gradual increase of the temperature of the earth's lower atmosphere as a result of the increase in greenhouse gases since the Industrial Revolution.  Aviation groups note that airlines have decreased fuel consumption per passenger mile by 70% over the past 40 years. The industry hopes to boost fuel efficiency by an additional 50% by 2020. Airlines also say that improving the air traffic control system will also improve efficiency and save fuel. Mar 14, 2007
