BEAMED UP

AS RUMORED LAST MAG, STEVE BERRA AND HEATH KIRCHART have quit Birdhouse to ride for Alien, though whether they will be straight members of the Sovereign Sect or leading their own project has yet to be determined. Heath, for one, is rumored to be more normal than ever and has even entered the fray of the ordinary by moving into the Emerica mansion with Reynolds, Ellington, Grecs, and team manager Regan-not that living in a skate mansion is normal, but relatively speaking, it's a big improvement over weirding out solo in an unfurnished tract home with nothing but video games for company.

Speaking of tract homes, the popular MTV show Cribs recently visited Tony Hawk's house for a segment. Needless to say, the fisheye twisting wiggle cam was in effect. Ya heard? Any new disclosures for the eons? How about Disney making a motion picture based on Tony's Occupation: Skateboarder autobiography? As DisCorp sources describe it in the Hollywood Reporter, this drama will be "A geeky, awkward kid coming of age in a Fast Times at Ridgemont High world."

Black Label's got some plans, as they dumped half of their am army into the pro tumbler. New signature model recipients include Melcher, Gilley, Alfaro, and most surprising of all Ragdoll, who didn't even have to spend any time on the am roster before scoring a board. For those running out of fingers, fear not: Rumor has several present pros shuffled to a future Master's Division company to be announced posthaste (soon).

ROCKED STARS

Ams with new wheels include Jose "Red Joe" Rojo who landed on Quattro, and Caswell "Hairy" Berry who will be ripping Rictas from their several packaging layers from now on.

Robert Plant-on-wheels Nate Jones will be adorned in Innes clothing, which may or may not be the most ripped-off brand of the season. Come now, everyone can't have eagles!

Justin Roy is now on Hollywood, although that's not too far from Foundation, so he should not get too shocked by the transparent transplant.

Danny Renaud has signed up with Habitat. Chomp on This has hit the shelves, sparking conversations on the nature of celebrity and the shabby skills of the industry's lens-men. Though Ty Evans and Gabe Morford surprised many with their onboard competence and grace, it's truly Eric Koston's GG Allin get-up and accompanied section which will have the kids grabbing for the remote. From his keg-side stumbling and never-say-die lines to his triumphant post-nine-stair-hippy-twist "Fuck you!," Koston continues to amaze with his skills and infectious comic timing. Think a video filled with porkers on the backside of 20 skating flatland won't sell? Put Koston in the shirt and watch it fly off the shelves. Koston is also rumored to be inking a publishing deal with Reagan Books.

DEATH WATCH

Zack Cordner has been observed with Brandy Broderick The "core" lensman and top glamour model were getting their halr done in Beverly Hills and later appeared at Bartell's Harley Davidson, getting outfitted for a patent leather rodeo.

Jay Adams has been released from custody in Hawaii and is currently working with Black Flys. He is arranging to come to California to connect with David Hackett and Swank. Death Box is the project Jay will be laboring on. Also connected to this are Brad Bowman, Pineapple Saladino, Mike Folmer, Rick Blackhart, Tom Inouye and Wentzle Ruml.

KONK RETE

Divergent opinions continue to proliferate regarding pending California legislation #SB 994. Spearheaded by Senator Morrow of Oceanside, this bill is intended to permanently establish many of the legal points temporarily secured by the infamous AB 1296. This test bill, which established skateboarding as a hazardous activity, is credited by many as having inspired a gigantic surge in the construction of public skateparks.

According to Jim Fitzpatrick, head of the International Association of Skateboard Companies, "SB 994 must be passed and approved if CA's public skateparks are to remain open and available to skateboarders. We cannot rely upon others to assure us of public skateparks." A number of skate industry heavyweights are supporting this bill including: Frank Messman, Tony and Steve Hawk, Chris Miller, Kevin Thatcher, Big "Ed" Riggins, and CCS.

World Industries is rumored close to joining the ever expanding Vans pantheon, who might get chomped up by the mouse who roared Disney.

BLOCKS BUSTER

Dogtown and Z Boys the motion picture captured another top award at the highly-rated Los Angeles AFI Film Festival. Most of the principals were on stage at the ludicrously ornate Grauman's Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. A frenzy of screen biz sharks circled amidst rumors of further celluloid deals afoot. Breaking it down, there are supposedly re-releases of both Skateboard starring Tony Alva and Gleaming the Cube featuring the boyish Hawk as a pizza delivery man. Another bio pic is being floated about TA. Sean Penn, Stacy Peralta, and Agi Orsi are preparing the Search for Captain Zero, which is a surfing misadventure deal. The life story of Jay Adams is being shopped as we speak Steve Olson is presenting a drama called The Skater. Mike Cassel is said to be doing a movie on the custom car progenitor Von Dutch. Connections on this may include Peralta, CR Stecyk, and Mike's former Grind King associate Jay Wilson. Terri Craft's long delayed production of the Juice cine (featuring Alva, Olson, and Jeff Ho) may be back on track with recent, meetings allegedly occurring with such personages as Wilson, Craft, Engblom and Cassell. And how did we get here? Back when "Harmful" Harmony Korine sold the Ken Park story and, of course, Kids to Larry Clark, a cycle began. Harmony went on to do Gummo. (For that matter, clay-wheeled skate type John Milius did the screenplay for uber-film Apocalypse Now and Big Wednesday, among other board-oriented things.) Spike Jonze's Being John Malkovich did biz. The precedent has been established. But who will be chosen to act/skate out these intrepid fantasy excursions? Established actors with bona fide skate connections whose names are being tossed about include Max Perlich, Spike Jonze, Jason Lee, Steve Berra, Steve Caballero and Lance Mountain. Acting is on rider's minds, but how many are willing to admit they are down with the thespian urge?

Steve Olson (the original world champion one) suffered a severe head impact when he skated into a running deer while running hills in Malibu, CA after dark. Following the collision with the large five-point buck, Steve claimed not to remember anything. The next weekend, Olson won a slalom event at West Los Angeles College. Shortly thereafter Steve showed up at La Costa for the Henry Hester giant slalom open, where he cavorted about in a tutu. The bizarreness of this absolutely true tale turns even more foul as Olson bests all present and takes the $1,500 dollar first place at La Costa. For the record, Kelly Mollica got second followed by Mike Masey and Brad Edwards. Dylan Gordon and Josh Byrd topped out the junior's heat. Other odd occurrences included Andy MacDonald trying every slalom board in sight and Bob Burnquist hitting the slopes at a very fast pace. Established slalom competitors like Cross, Criddle, Chicken, Arab, Dunn, Chaput, Hester, Skoldberg, Gilmour and the O'shei's all seemed taken aback by t he torrent of energy.
