Transportation Security Administration to Test GE Explosives Detectors in Final Stage of Commuter Rail Pilot; Mobile Screening Car to Check Passenger Baggage for Explosives.


WILMINGTON, Mass. -- GE Infrastructure, Security, a unit of General Electric Company, announced that the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  Transportation Security Administration will utilize GE's Itemiser explosives trace detector Explosives trace detector's (ETD) are security equipment able to detect explosives of small magnitude. Devices similar to ETDs are also used to detect narcotics. The equipment is used mainly in airports and other vulnerable areas considered susceptible to acts of unlawful  for the third and final phase of its Transit and Rail Inspection Pilot (TRIP) program for screening railway passenger baggage for explosives.

The trial is expected to yield important data about effectiveness of the screening equipment, as well as the impact on commuter rail operations.

In May 2004, GE participated in TSA's Phase I of the TRIP program, a month-long evaluation that consisted of the non-intrusive screening of passengers with GE's EntryScan3 walk-though explosives detection portal at the Amtrak/MARC rail station at New Carrollton, Maryland New Carrollton is a city located in central Prince George's County, Maryland, in the United States. As of the 2000 census, population was 12,589.
