To make or shape with or as if with an ax: hew a path through the underbrush. 2. closer to Latin texts" is like translating the works of Shakespeare into Spanish and then requiring that all future Shakespeare translations conform to Verb 1. conform to - satisfy a condition or restriction; "Does this paper meet the requirements for the degree?" fit, meet coordinate - be co-ordinated; "These activities coordinate well" the Spanish (Tom Heneghan, "At a Loss for Words," November 18). The dispute between Lutherans and Catholics in Germany over biblical translations is not, in the end, about scholarly disagreements; it's about authority and tradition. The Vatican privileges Latin because it is the language of ecclesiastical nostalgia, the lingua franca lingua franca (lĭng`gwə frăng`kə), an auxiliary language, generally of a hybrid and partially developed nature, that is employed over an extensive area by people speaking different and mutually unintelligible tongues in order to of the clerical caste.
