The Prize is awarded to companies for new and imaginative products and services based on information and communications technologies, or "digital technologies." This covers the converging fields of computer, media and communications industries - considered to be among the driving forces in modern economies. The Prize is supported by the European Commission European Commission, branch of the governing body of the European Union (EU) invested with executive and some legislative powers. Located in Brussels, Belgium, it was founded in 1967 when the three treaty organizations comprising what was then the European Community  as part of its efforts to promote Europe's ICT industry and boost growth.

From this group of 20 "Grand Prize Nominees" (including Transitive) announced today, 3 "Grand Prize Winners" will be announced at CeBIT in Hanover, Germany on March 16, 2007.
