However, principals are hired by a ballet or dance company to perform not only solos, but also pas de deux. A principal may be male or female.  Yvonne Borree, passed away on December 26, 2003.

Doreen Bird Doreen Bird (27 January 1928 – 4 February 2004) was a British dance teacher and founder of the Doreen Bird College of Performing Arts (now Bird College) in Sidcup, Kent. , dance educator and founder of Bird College for dance and theater performance, died on February 4, 2004. She was 76 years old.

Genia Melikova, former dancer with the Grand Ballet du Marquis de Cuevas and beloved Juilliard teacher, died in March 2004. She was 74. Heather Wisner, DANCE MAGAZINE writer, remembers: "She was my dance camp teacher when I was 16. She taught us the cygnets from Swan Lake, among other things, and whenever we had to balance she would say, 'Hold foreeeeeeeeever ... and down.'"
