"Since 1988 there has been a minimum of one death per month," said Smith, who was careful to point out that not everyone killed identified as transgendered. "In many cases it's all in how killers perceived their victims."

Among those remembered this year was Nizah Morris Nizah Morris (1955 - December 24, 2002) was a 47-year-old African American transgender woman and entertainer in Philadelphia. On December 22, 2002 Morris suffered a severe head injury from which she did not recover. , a transgendered woman who was killed in Philadelphia last December.
