information including payment card numbers is absolutely secure," said Mail-Gard Vice President Jerry Montella. "Compliance with the PCI standard goes a long way toward being able to provide that assurance."

The result of a collaboration between Visa and MasterCard to create common industry security requirements and adopted in 2004, the PCI Data Security Standard calls for secure networks, vulnerability management programs, strong access-control measures, regular network monitoring The term network monitoring describes the use of a system that constantly monitors a computer network for slow or failing systems and that notifies the network administrator in case of outages via email, pager or other alarms.  and testing; and stringent information security policies.

As a Level 2 service provider, Mail-Gard required validation of compliance by both a qualified security assessor and an approved scanning vendor. Validation involved identifying and correcting vulnerabilities to maintain appropriate levels of information security. Levels of compliance are based on volume of transactions, potential risk and exposure introduced into the payment system.

Crimson Security, Hauppauge, N.Y., a leading provider of information security and compliance management solutions, conducted the PCI security audit and validated Mail-Gard as a Level 2 service provider. Qualys, Inc. served as the PCI-approved scanning vendor.

"Consumers place a high value on the protection of their personal information," said Transcontinental Direct President Rob Young. "Transcontinental Direct leads the way in ensuring that stringent safeguards are in place to protect that information. We're proud that our compliance with PCI standard ensures the information we are entrusted with cannot be compromised."
