Transcom recognizes partners for success in War in Terrorism.Over 100 commercial transportation partners were recognized by U.S. Transportation Command for the work in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. Nominations came from SDDC as well as Transportation Command and its other subordinate commands. Gen. John Handy, Commander, awarded the firms a Transportation Command Certificate of Appreciation. The certificates cite the air, sea and surface transportation partners as an integral part of the overall Defense Transportation System who assisted the command in providing timely, efficient and coordinated movement of troops and equipment. In support of the War on Terrorism Terrorist acts and the threat of Terrorism have occupied the various law enforcement agencies in the U.S. government for many years. The Anti-Terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996, as amended by the usa patriot act , Transportation Command has moved more than 885,000 passengers and over 2.5 million tons of equipment and supplies. The commercial partners included bus and airline passenger carriers; railroad, motor and ocean cargo carriers; container, ship and port authorities; and stevedores and labor relations associations. SDDC Operations Center staffers were enthusiastic about the recognition. "The rail carriers provided excellent support during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, said Evert Bono, chief, Domestic Business Requirements Division. "At one point they supplied the Department of Defense with 87 percent of all available 89-foot chain tie down cars in the inventory to support the warfighter." All SDDC's carriers were complimented by Brad Bernard, chief, Movement Control Center, and Maj. Jeff Thurber, detachment commander, Movement Control Center. "Many of out carriers went over and beyond what was expected to insure the mission was accomplished," said Bernard. "Carriers were very responsive to the Movement Control Center when queried on specific service related matters," said Thurber. "They responded very quickly to out needs and questions such as vessel status, load status and shipment location." Non-standard motor carrier loads were cited by Brian Ridgeway, a traffic management specialist in the Movement Control Center. "The Department of Defense reached out to our commercial motor carrier partners and in a joint collaboration shipped a staggering 103-million pounds of over-dimensional or over weight loads on 1,411-plus trucks," said Ridgeway. "Our motor carrier partners moved over 108,000 truckloads including nearly 20,000 shipments of arms, ammunition and explosives. "By being enormously flexible and with a sense of urgency out partners timely handling of out freight resulted in one the most expeditious deployments this country has ever known."
