Transbay Joint Powers Authority Unveils Proposed Design Concepts for New Landmark Transbay Transit Center and Tower.

Three Remaining Teams in Competition to Design the New World-Class Facilities

SAN FRANCISCO San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden  -- Three internationally renowned architects and their partner developers today presented their design concepts of the new Transbay Transit Center and adjoining tower to a special meeting of the Transbay Joint Powers Authority A Joint Powers Authority (JPA) is an institution permitted under the laws of some states of the USA, whereby two or more public authorities (e.g. local governments, or utility or transport districts) can operate collectively.  Board of Directors. The meeting was held at 6pm in the Board of Supervisors Chambers at City Hall in San Francisco.

The Board heard three varied proposals from:

In addition, the public provided comments on each of the designs for what will be San Francisco's newest landmarks. The TJPA Board will select the most qualified architect-developer team on September 20, 2007 and the first phase of construction for the new Transit Center will begin in two years.

These presentations culminate an eight-month International Design and Development (D/D D/D Drug/Disease

) competition with the purpose of selecting an outstanding and functional design that is economically viable and provides a sound economic return to the TJPA. The TJPA Board envisions the new Transbay Transit Center as an important addition to the "public realm" - the Grand Central of the West, with a million square feet of transit and public areas.

The new Transbay Transit Center at First and Mission streets will centralize the region's transportation network by accommodating eight transportation systems under one roof, including AC Transit AC Transit (in full, Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District) is a regional bus agency serving parts of Alameda County and Contra Costa County in the western coastal area of the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area. , Caltrain, MUNI, Golden Gate Transit Golden Gate Transit is a public transportation system in the San Francisco Bay Area in California, United States. It mainly serves Marin and Sonoma Counties, and also provides limited service to San Francisco and Contra Costa County. , SamTrans, Greyhound, BART and future California High-Speed Rail The California High-Speed Rail project is a proposed high-speed rail system in the state of California. The system is being planned by the California High-Speed Rail Authority, which will design, build, and operate the system. . The area surrounding the Transit Center will be redeveloped to include housing, retail, and an adjacent tower poised to redefine the city's skyline.

"We are immensely proud to be presenting these innovative visions for the future of transportation in our City," said Mayor Gavin Newsom. "As the centerpiece of the Transbay Redevelopment Area and the focus of bus and rail transit for the region, the Transit Center will solidify San Francisco's place as the leader in public transportation and sustainable, transportation-oriented development."

"This project is a real solution to traffic congestion The condition of a network when there is not enough bandwidth to support the current traffic load.

in California cities, which is projected to be among the nation's worst by 2025," said Jerry Hill, Chair of the TJPA Board of Directors. "The new Transit Center will reconnect the region and its transit systems, allowing easier access to convenient public transportation options, thereby encouraging people to get out of their cars and off of our freeways."

The three proposed designs will be evaluated by the D/D Competition Jury, a nine-member panel with a broad spectrum of design and development expertise. All jurors were selected by the competition manager and approved by the TJPA Board.

"Today is a historic day. After decades of planning, the Transbay project is now a reality," said Maria Ayerdi, Executive Director of the TJPA. "The new Transit Center will serve as the City's newest landmark and address congestion, housing and economic development."

The TJPA sought a team that would create a unique, world class Transit Center and Tower whose aesthetic, functional and technical excellence are worthy of their position as the centerpiece of the new Transbay neighborhood which will feature 3,400 new homes (35% affordable to working families) around the new facilities and the focus of bus and rail transit for San Francisco, the Bay Area, and the State of California.

In its heyday at the end of World War II End of World War II can refer to:
  • End of World War II in Europe
  • End of World War II in Asia
, the terminal's rail system was transporting 26 million passengers annually. After the war ended and gas rationing was eliminated, the terminal's use began to steadily decline to a rate of four to five million people traveling by rail per year. With this new, modern Transit Center the Bay Area will enjoy a new generation of convenient and accessible public transportation. The new Transit Center will also accommodate future California High Speed Rail, facilitating travel between San Francisco and Los Angeles in less than 2 1/2 hours.

The proposed designs will be on display at San Francisco City Hall's North Light Court on Tuesday, August 7th from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The public is encouraged to comment on the designs during that time or online at: www.transbaycenter.org. The D/D Jury recommendation will be brought before the TJPA Board on September 20, 2007 at San Francisco City Hall The City Hall of San Francisco California, opened in 1915, in its open space area in the city's Civic Center, is a Beaux-Arts monument to the brief "City Beautiful" movement that epitomized the high-minded American Renaissance of the period 1880-1917.  at which time the Board will vote on the final proposal.
