TransUnion Receives Certification in Honduras.First and Only Credit Reporting Company to Receive This Distinction CHICAGO -- TransUnion has become the first and only private credit reporting company to be certified to operate in Honduras Honduras (hŏnd r`əs, –dy r`–; Span., ōnd `räs), officially Republic of Honduras, republic (2005 est. pop. by the National Banking Commission. With this certification, TransUnion has demonstrated that it can accept and handle the data of other regulated entities such as banks, finance and insurance companies. "Nothing is more important than the safety and security of the information we maintain on a daily basis," said TransUnion's Tatiana Zelaya, general manager, Honduras. "The dedication and work that went in to this year long certification process is a testament to our commitment to this market, our business customers and the consumers we serve." To achieve certification, organizations must undergo an intensive process where they must surpass certain financial, legal, security and administrative requirements outlined by the Comision Nacional de Bancos y Seguros. TransUnion's certification comes on the heels of its recently released research study on the benefits of credit reporting companies to countries such as Honduras. The study compared the consumer-lending sector of economies with private, full-file systems and high participation rates against those with lower participation and limited reporting. Compared to similar economies within the region, Honduras has a high percentage of full-file reporting on consumers. However, opportunity still exists for the public sharing and inclusion of payment information from utility companies in a credit file. For a consumer with "thin" file or those that have no credit history, the reporting of utility information is key element and a relatively easy way in assisting them in establishing credit. Approximately only 25 percent of the adult population has a credit file in Honduras. "We are proud of the work that has been completed to date on all fronts to help bring the benefits of credit to all sectors of society," said Zelaya. "But more can be done on both the education front and to assist those consumers with thin files. Now with our certification, we look forward to working more closely with government organizations and a variety of financial institutions to help businesses and consumers achieve their goals."
