WHEN? Since 2003

Q: What sparked your interest in triathlon triathlon, athletic event made up of three contests. Since the 1970s the term has come to mean especially a race combining swimming, bicycling, and running. A notable example is Hawaii's Ironman Triathlon, held since 1978, which features a 2.  competition?

A: Five and a half years ago, I had become bored with gym workouts and--having just had a third child--needed to become even more focused and goal-oriented A system, person, or organization that tends to achieve a goal and demonstrate it in subsequent actions.

Goal-oriented or goal-driven/goal-directed/purposive is a property of systems which are able to think/reason/inference using symbols.

With encouragement from family and friends, I decided to try it. I started off with the attitude that I didn't have to do it; I'd simply set the goal to go for it so that I'd get involved in the training regime. However, as soon as I started training, I was hooked hooked adverb Addicted .

Q: What exactly is a triathlon, and how do you train for it?

While people do train in groups, I prefer an individual schedule that doesn't require coordination with others. To prepare for the Columbia Triathlon, I start my official 13-week training program in January indoors and eventually move the biking and running outside. Throughout the year I maintain my basic condition with four or five 30-to-60-minute cardio Cardio is the medical term used to reference the heart. From Greek kardia: heart. Q: How do you find time for the required training?

A: To accommodate time, I have training equipment at home. I also get a lot of support from my family and co-workers. I can come in late, for example, and my colleagues know that I'll still get the job done. It seems that people who have something outside of work that is driving them generally are healthier and more creative employees.

Q: Why have you continued to compete in this way?

A: It sharpens my time-management skills and flexibility, because weather and schedules can affect training plans. If I'm planning to run and I awake to pouring rain, I must make some decisions about how I'll fit in the training. I also appreciate the fact that I do have control aver my training in ways that balance the lack of control we find in our association lives.

Of course, every year, when we get to the end of the training schedule and we're working out 460 minutes per week, I say: "I'm never doing this again." However, race day comes and when I cross the finish line, I realize that this is a goal of mine. When you have this kind of success, you can't stop.
