Trail trotters' day exceeds expectations.

Horse enthusiasts are making tracks with a new program that encourages equestrians to take on trail management. Starting on National Trails Day (June 4), the Equestrian equestrian

ELCR hoped that by volunteering, equestrians would not only improve the trails they ride, but also build goodwill with land managers and create better access for the future. The program was named Trail Trotters Day.

During 2005, 62 registered projects occurred, with 5,525 volunteer hours logged. Based on figures used by federal agencies, these total hours are valued at close to $97,000 in labor. The inaugural year of this Trail Trotters program concluded on Oct. 5, 2005, with the presentation of the Trail Trotters' National Stewardship stewardship

ELCR Director Liz Madison of Sterling, Va., said, "With forest managers short-staffed and unsure of how to connect with equestrian groups, it was up to us to take the initiative on trail projects like these. The more you engage equestrians in conservation, the more it breaks down barriers and stereotypes about equestrian use."
