Trader Joe's to open first Manhattan store.


Specialty grocer, Trader Joe's Trader Joe's is a privately held chain of specialty grocery stores headquartered in Monrovia, California. As of September 2007, Trader Joe's has a total of 284 stores.[1] , is set to open its first store in the Manhattan market within the next few months.

The Monrovia, Calif.-based business will occupy 15,000 s/f at New York New York, state, United States
New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of

Allison Muchizuki, a spokeswoman, for Trader Joe's declined to comment on the real estate aspect, but said, "There are a lot of foodies in Manhattan, and we're excited to be there."

Whole Foods opened its 50,000 s/f store at 4 Union Square just last spring. Balducci's recently opened a 10,000 s/f store at Eighth Avenue and 14th Street.

"[Trader Joe's is] going to give Whole Foods and Balducci's a real run for their money," said Faith Hope Consolo, chairman of the retail sales and leasing division at Prudential Douglas Elliman.

 Consolo, the company had been studying the Manhattan market for a long time, waiting for the right time to move in.

"When they saw the success of Whole Foods, they decided to take the plunge," she said.

Consolo predicts that Trader Joe's will now start to look for openings in the other boroughs, hitting Brooklyn first, followed by Queens, Bronx and Staten Island Staten Island (1990 pop. 378,977), 59 sq mi (160 sq km), SE N.Y., in New York Bay, SW of Manhattan, forming Richmond co. of New York state and the borough of Staten Island of New York City. .
