Toyota topped GM in global sales in 2007: report.

Toyota Motor Corp. topped General Motors Corp. in global sales in 2007, the U.S. Automotive News weekly said Thursday in its electronic edition.

The two automakers finished in a dead heat for the No. 1 spot, with GM exceeding Toyota with about 3,500 vehicles. But GM included in its total 516,435 vehicles of the Wuling brand in China, in which GM owns only 34 percent of the Chinese company that produces Wuling vehicles, SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile Co., the report said.

 its own tally, the weekly subtracted the Wuling brand vehicles from GM's reported total. As a result, GM sold 8,885,599 vehicles in 2007, well behind Toyota's estimated 9,370,000 vehicles, the report said. It said Toyota will issue an official total in about a month.

In 2006, more than 69 million motor vehicles, including cars and commercial vehicles were produced worldwide.  Corp., a major automaker in China, owns 50.1 percent of SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile.

In its June 2007 report, the weekly compiled a similar tally and said Toyota surpassed GM for the first time in 2006 global sales.
