Noun 1. selectman - an elected member of a board of officials who run New England towns Jonathan Ruda proposed the change in the election date, which would place the May town meeting earlier than the election. The benefits, he said, include budget adoption before ballot questions, such as Proposition 2-1/2 overrides. Additionally, the work to prepare the next budget would be deliberated by experienced incumbents before newly elected officials take office.
Voters will also vote on the replacement of a water main on Dudley-Oxford Road and a $13.3 million budget.

The $13.3 million budget for fiscal 2013 is predicated on receiving $1.6 million in state aid, $9.3 million in taxes and $2.1 million in local receipts.
It was balanced, in part, with $250,000 from stabilization and with the assumption that voters will agree to move $126,000 in warrant requests to the fall. The new budget year begins July 1.
"All departments are level-funded from last May and only in areas where costs are not controlled but mandated is where increases occurred," finance committee chairman Brian McCoy said yesterday.
The budget includes a $477,045 assessment for Bay Path Regional Vocational Technical High School and $6.2 million, or $141,516 less than requested, for the Dudley-Charlton Regional School District.
The school district has assessed the minimum allowed by state law for the past five years.
This year, the school committee has dropped $3.3 million from the recommended budget by eliminating 29 positions and cutting capital improvements, maintenance, technology and supplies.
To avoid further cuts, school officials are requesting $141,516 more than minimum from Dudley and $171,920 above the minimum from Charlton.
Charlton selectmen approved the full request Tuesday.
The Dudley budget allows for the minimum assessment. If voters add the $141,516 on the town meeting floor, Mr. McCoy said, the result would be deep cuts in municipal services.
The Water Commission is seeking to borrow $850,000 to install a water main on Dudley-Oxford Road from Center Road to Jaybee Avenue.
Water Commissioner Jay R. Spahl said, "It's an upgrade of an old system and it is a trunk line that feeds several neighborhoods. It's a good time for an upgrade for that part of town."
The existing main dates back to the 1940s or 1950s, he said. A new 12-inch line would allow for fire hydrants, new services to existing homes and future hookups for new home sites.
