This work assesses the possibility that China may be persuaded to submit to international adjudication concerning its territorial and boundary disputes and what the eventual settlements might look like. The author reviews the nature of such disputes and critiques the tendency to classify them as either political or legal. He then examines the established international law with regard to territorial and boundary disputes as revealed by the practice of the International Court of Justice, and then, following an analysis of the challenges and opportunities in convincing China to submit to adjudication, reviews the cases of the Sino-Japanese disputes in the East China Sea, the disputes over the Spratly Islands, and the Sino-Indian border disputes.
