Tough, clear hardcoating stands up to steel wool. (Auxiliaries).

A new family of clear, super-hard coatings based on a liquid blend of silica and resin is said to outperform conventional hardcoats. For example, surfaces treated with PermaNew coatings from California Hardcoating Co., Chula Vista Chula Vista (ch`lə), city (1990 pop. 135,163), San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1911. , Calif., are said to resist scratching even when rubbed with coarse steel wool steel wool, abrasive material composed of long steel fibers of varying degrees of fineness that are matted together. The coarser grades are used to remove paint and other finishes, the finer grades for polishing or smoothing a finished surface. . And unlike other hard-coatings, PermaNew can be applied in humid conditions (up to 75% RH). This can save users considerable expense for humidity-control equipment and make it feasible for more processors to apply their own hardcoatings on plastics products. Moreover, while most epoxies, polyurethanes, and other high-performance coatings typically cost more than 20 Cents/sq ft, PermaNew coatings can be applied for less than 10 Cents/sq ft.

Available in either heat-cured or uv-cured versions, these coatings adhere directly to many plastics, including acrylic, polycarbonate A category of plastic materials used to make a myriad of products, including CDs and CD-ROMs. , rigid polyurethanes, epoxies, and thermoset A polymer-based liquid or powder that becomes solid when heated, placed under pressure, treated with a chemical or via radiation. The curing process creates a chemical bond that, unlike a thermoplastic, prevents the material from being remelted. See thermoplastic.  polyesters (including composites with glass or carbon fiber). PermaNew uv formulations can also be applied to primerless ABS and PS. Some plastics may require a primer or surface treatment, particularly when using the heat-cured formulations.

The heat-cured coatings are based on a highly crosslinkable silicone resin Noun 1. silicone resin - a polymeric silicone compound
