Toshiba's DOCSIS 2.0-certified PCX2600 cable modem is the logical next step in DOCSIS 2.0 capabilities, building upon the A-TDMA support found in the company's PCX2500 model. It enables increased upstream throughput from the end user to the Internet, and provides the network operator the ability to offer symmetrical bi-directional data services. The PCX2600 Cable Modem will also provide easy backward compatibility with DOCSIS 1.0 and 1.1 standards. Toshiba expects cable operators to be able to create and support new services for both home and business use such as video conferencing and peer-to-peer applications with the new model. "Although Toshiba has been producing cable modems with some DOCSIS 2.0 capabilities for a while now, the PCX2600 certification gives us the green light to start selling modems with both A-TDMA and S-CDMA protocols to MSOs that are currently laying the foundation for future DOCSIS 2.0 deployments," said Fred Berry, vice president, general manager of Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., Network Products Division. "Toshiba is strongly committed to DOCSIS 2.0 standards and to developing innovative broadband access products that continue to help cable operators expand their services offerings." Toshiba's PCX4500 Wireless Cable Modem Router unit includes a Toshiba cable modem, an 802.11b router for wireless networking and a Stateful Inspection firewall. The unit is CableHome-based, DOCSIS 2.0-ready and has single Ethernet and USB ports. The PCX4500 is Toshiba's second wireless cable modem router product. Toshiba's PCX5000 Wireless Cable Modem Router, which also offers the cable modem, 802.11b wireless router and Stateful Inspection firewall, as well as four 10/100 ports, began shipping in December 2002. Toshiba NPD has a strong record of successful CableLabs certifications.
