research firm IDC. This world-leading position in CE HDD shipments is Toshiba's first, marking the company's growth and innovation with its 2.5-inch, 1.8-inch and 0.85-inch HDDs for consumer electronics and automotive applications.

According to IDC, in Q3, Toshiba had a global market share of 27.5 percent for all HDDs shipped into CE, and an impressive 43.9 percent share when excluding the 3.5-inch drive category. This leadership position underscores Toshiba's commitment to providing robust storage technology and solid execution to meet demand for key applications such as mobile PCs, GPS systems, MP3 players and automobile entertainment systems.

"This has been a landmark year for Toshiba with milestone achievements in new technologies like perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR PMR 1 Percutaneous myocardial revascularization, see there 2 Perinatal mortality rate 3 Polymyalgia rheumatica 4 Proportionate mortality ratio, see there ), automotive HDDs and shipment of our 100 millionth mobile HDD," said Scott Maccabe, vice president and general manager, Toshiba Storage Device Division. "We continue to see tremendous demand for small form factor HDDs in traditional markets like mobile computing Using a computing device while in transit. Mobile computing implies wireless transmission, but wireless transmission does not necessarily imply mobile computing. Fixed wireless applications use satellites, radio systems and lasers to transmit between permanent objects such as buildings , as well as new consumer devices. Our performance in Q3 is indicative of our ability to drive adoption of leading-edge storage technologies and deliver on market demand."

Toshiba has been first-to-market on innovative mobile HDD products, including announcement and shipment of PMR drives. Toshiba's 1.8-inch PMR HDD set new records in areal density The number of bits per square inch of storage surface. It typically refers to disk drives, where the number of bits per inch (bpi) times the number of tracks per inch (tpi) yields the areal density.  by boosting the capacity of a single 1.8-inch platter to 40 gigabytes. The company also introduced the world's smallest HDD at 0.85 inches and has led the HDD industry in pioneering storage technologies for the automotive market. Toshiba is the world's leading supplier of automotive-class HDDs with more than 80 percent market share according to TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident) Refers to a program that remains in memory when the user exits it in order that it be immediately available at the press of a hotkey. .

"We continue to see strong demand in the mobile HDD segment, a strategic segment for Toshiba," said Dave Reinsel, program director for storage research at IDC. "As the HDD industry becomes more competitive, the companies who will win must have both the right technology and innovations, and be able to deliver on customer demand."

Toshiba Technologies Drive New CE Devices

Toshiba's automotive HDDs can be found in on-board media centers and global positioning systems. Toshiba's 1.8-inch HDD has enabled the introduction of mobile entertainment devices, handheld computers, ultra-portable notebooks, portable handheld GPS Handheld GPS use GPS Signal from a minimum of 3 overhead satellites to obtain a fix which is usually accurate to within 30m. Actual accuracy can be achieved down to 5m but due to US Military intervention accuracy is restricted.

Popular brands include Garmin, Magellan Navigation.
units, MP3 players and other specialized digital products since its launch in 2000. Toshiba's 0.85-inch HDD, the first drive to provide multi-gigabyte storage capacity in a sub-one-inch form factor, will enable unprecedented functionality for next-generation mobile digital devices, including mobile phones, digital audio players, PDAs, digital still cameras, camcorders and external storage devices by providing a high-capacity storage solution in a compact design.
