"As the market leader for notebook computers in the retail channel, we have consistently provided Toshiba quality in a value-priced notebook computer for small office/home office See SOHO.  and price-sensitive buyers. The new Satellite T2100 Series boasts an even more powerful feature-set while maintaining a competitive price point."

Steve Lair, vice president of marketing for the Computer Systems Division of Toshiba America Information Systems Inc., commented on the Satellite buyer. "We believe that our Satellite customer is primarily concerned with quality and reliability, yet desires the most performance he can afford in a notebook computer."

Lair further said that a variety of the new features found in the Satellite T2100 Series were added as a result of customer feedback. "From the two PC Card expansion slots and port replicator option to the exterior gray casing and AccuPoint pointing device with a generous palmrest, the Satellite buyer will be pleased to see these enhanced features are now part of the Satellite product line."

Satellite T2100 Key Features

The Satellite T2100 Series features three configurations: The T2100 model includes a crisp 9.5-inch monochrome screen with a 260 million byte (=250MB) hard disk drive and 4MB RAM, expandable to 28MB. An extra-large 10.4-inch dual-scan color display is featured on the T2100CS which comes with a 350 million byte (=330MB) hard disk drive and 4MB RAM, expandable to 28MB.

The T2100CT is available with an 8.4-inch active-matrix color screen, a 350 million byte hard disk drive and 8MB RAM, expandable to 32MB. All models feature a new "fast-page access" D-RAM See dynamic RAM.  system which allows the system to respond faster than conventional RAM in performance-driven applications.

"We have raised the market's minimum bar of performance in the Satellite T2100 Series by adding a 50MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  SL Enhanced i486(tm)DX2 processor, an enhanced video subsystem and local-bus to increase video performance," Lair commented. These models support up to 640 x 480 at 6K colors simultaneously and 1024 x 768 at 256 colors externally.

For expansion options, Toshiba offers two stacked PC Card (PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association, San Jose, CA, www.pcmcia.org) An international standards body and trade association that was founded in 1989 to establish a standard for connecting peripherals to portable computers. PCMCIA created the PC Card. See PC Card. ) expansion slots which accept one Type III or two Type II PC cards. The Satellite T2100 Series accepts more than 250 PC Cards from Toshiba with their Noteworthy(tm) brand as well as third-party vendors ranging from fax/modems, hard disk drives, network connectivity and CD-ROM CD-ROM: see compact disc.

Furthermore, an optional port replicator is available with Toshiba's exclusive lever-action design for easy one-touch connectivity to office peripherals. These models also provide "Plug and Play" support for easy expandability of add-in cards and automatic configuration of the system based on its docked or undocked state. These "Plug and Play" features will be enabled with future operating systems including Microsoft(r) Windows(r) 95.

New Satellite Design Features

Increased portability begins with the addition of a new fully built-in power supply. "The advantage of an integrated power supply is that there is no bulky AC adapter to carry, just a 10-foot cord further reducing the overall carry weight. This advanced built-in design also eliminates the need of a fan which can consume battery life and introduce dust," stated Lair.

Powered by a NiMH battery, the monochrome model can obtain from 3 to 6 hours of battery life while the color models can achieve from 2.5 to 4 hours. Toshiba's MaxTime(r) power management system provides additional support to maximize the notebook's performance.

Other new design features include the integrated ambidextrous ambidextrous /am·bi·dex·trous/ (am?bi-dek´strus) able to use either hand with equal dexterity.

For measurement and weight specifications, the T2100 is 11.8 inches (W) by 8.9 inches (D) by 1.9 inches (H) and weighs 6.6 pounds.
