, a leading provider of metering solutions worldwide, announces that Toronto Hydro, the largest municipal utility in Canada, is piloting the EnergyAxis(R) System. The EnergyAxis System is a metering automation system that utilizes a 900 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  controlled mesh network with Elster's single-phase electronic REX REX - The original name for Restructured EXtended eXecutor. (R) meters and A3 ALPHA(R) meter collectors. Toronto Hydro is testing the system's two-way communications capability in three locations in the City of Toronto.

The EnergyAxis System enables Toronto Hydro to collect hourly interval and time-of-use metering data on electricity consumption from commercial installations, townhouses, and single-family residences. Toronto Hydro is testing the system's two-way meter-to-meter communication capabilities by stretching communications distances between meters up to 1,000 feet and installing meters in communications-challenged locations such as metal boxes and the basements of older homes.

In addition, Toronto Hydro is utilizing the EnergyAxis Metering Automation Server (MAS) hosted by Elster in Raleigh, NC. MAS enables Toronto Hydro to use additional system features such as flexible rate structures, two-way communications and on-demand meter reads in response to the Government of Ontario's Smart Metering Initiative. "We are very interested in this pilot program and we expect that it will help us prepare for smart metering in Ontario," says Blair Peberdy, vice president communications and public affairs of Toronto Hydro Corporation.

"We are delighted that Toronto Hydro has chosen to test the EnergyAxis System to meet the Government of Ontario's Smart Meter Initiative," stated Jack Robertson, general manager of Elster Metering in Canada. "It's impressive to see how proactive Toronto Hydro has been to respond to the Government's directive. They have been quick to realize the benefits of a full two-way system that can do interval and TOU in the meter, without requiring special communication towers or repeaters. They can easily install the meters and the system creates its own communication network."
