Toray to Expand Production of Optical Polyester Films for FPDs in Korea.Tokyo, Japan, July 15, 2005 - (JCNN JCNN Japan Corporate News Network ) - Toray announced on July 14 its plan to increase production of optical polyester films for flat panel displays A thin display screen for computer and TV usage. The first flat panels appeared on laptop computers in the mid-1980s, and the LCD technology became the standard. Stand-alone LCD screens became available for desktop computers in the mid-1990s and exceeded sales of CRTs for the first time such as LCDs and plasma displays Also called "gas discharge display," a flat-screen technology that uses tiny cells lined with phosphor that are full of inert ionized gas (typically a mix of xenon and neon). Three cells make up one pixel (one cell has red phosphor, one green, one blue). . The company will pour 5 billion yen ($44.5 mil) into its Korean subsidiary Toray Saehan in order to build a new facility with an annual capacity of 13,200 tons. Slated for launch in early 2007, the new facility will allow Toray to respond to globally growing demands for LCDs and PDPs.
