Toray Files New Drug Application of TRK-820 Antipruritic Agent, Treatment of Severe Pruritus in Hemodialysis Patients in Japan.


Tokyo, Japan, Nov 30, 2006 - (JCN) - Toray, JT and Torii Pharmaceutical announced November 28 that the companies have filed for a new drug application in Japan for TRK-820, an antipruritic antipruritic /an·ti·pru·rit·ic/ (-proo-rit´ik) preventing or relieving itching, or an agent that does this.

Hemodialysis-related uremic pruritus is a condition that causes systemic and severe itching, without inflammation, and with an unclear pathology. Hemodialysis patients with serious pruritus suffer from lack of sleep due to severe itching, which not only worsens their quality of life (QOL), but is also one of the causes of aggravated systemic symptoms. TRK-820 is a selective kappa opioid receptor The κ-Opioid receptors are a class of opioid receptors with dynorphins as the primary endogenous ligands, and ketazocine as a potent selective exogenous ligand. There are three variants: κ1, κ2, and κ3.  agonist and is expected to be effective with its novel mechanism in treating itching which is resistant to conventional drugs such as antihistamines.

The application for the new drug has been filed by Toray, and subject to approval, the product will be marketed by Torii.
