Top Japanese award to U.S. scientist.LIVERMORE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 1, 1994--A California scientist has been awarded the Third Order of the Sacred Treasure, Japan's highest honor for non-citizens. Mortimer Mendelsohn, former head of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's Biomedical and Environmental Research program, and currently vice chairman of the Radiation Effects Research Foundation in Hiroshima, Japan, was presented the award for his research on the health of atomic bomb survivors in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The awards are given twice yearly, much like the Queen's list in England. The medal is a 2-inch white star burst, with ruby spots. Mendelsohn has served for two years at RERF RERF Radiation Effects Research Foundation and was formerly chairman of its Scientific Council. RERF is a U.S.-Japanese organization that explores health effects in the survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were nuclear attacks during World War II against the Empire of Japan by the United States of America under US President Harry S. Truman. . Mendelsohn oversees a staff of some 400 experts in epidemiology, medicine, genetics, molecular biology and computer science who study the irradiated survivors and their offspring.
