Top 50 Owned & Used Home Software Rankings; Usage of Microsoft Golf and Encarta Show Largest Gains.NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--December 15, 1998--Media Metrix today announced its third quarter ranking of the Top 50 most-used and owned software applications among PC users at home. Media Metrix is the only source of real-time, actual software ownership and usage at an installed base level, unlike previous rankings of application and utility software products that are based on sales of product through retail channels. With its patented PC Meter(tm) technology, Media Metrix delivers the first-ever software rankings based on what people actually use, as opposed to proxy indicators of what was purchased or what people remember they purchased. The largest gains in software usage between the second and third quarter of 1998 were among two Microsoft products. Microsoft Golf and Microsoft Encarta saw the largest gains, jumping 65 and 38 places respectively. Microsoft Golf rose to 45th from the 110th most used product and Microsoft Encarta rose to the 50th from the 88th most used product. Beyond the World Wide Web, Media Metrix provides invaluable insight into how people are actually using their computers - in addition to the web, it measures audience usage of proprietary online services, other ad-supported applications and software and hardware ownership and usage. Media Metrix' primary advantage is its unique PC user data retrieval method: its patented, proprietary PC Meter(tm) software technology. The PC Meter works with the computer OS to track and measure actual, real-time PC usage data and records detailed demographic information for each PC user. For example, if a title has a 2% reach that means that 2% of all PC using individuals used that title within the given month. Sample Size: More than 28,000 PC-using individuals throughout the U.S. participate in the Media Metrix At Home sample. (Media Metrix also maintains a separate sample of business PC users.) - About Media Metrix Technology Measurement The Media Metrix Technology Group provides data from the first ever on-going effort to electronically scan and monitor actual PC usage and ownership in a demographically balanced sample of households. The PCs in these households are equipped with Media Metrix' proprietary, patented PC Meter software, which runs continuously to track real-time PC usage. Media Metrix is the only audience measurement company which tracks and measures all usage activity taking place on the PC, not just on the web. Data collected electronically with the Media Metrix PC Meter is far more reliable than information gathered in surveys, which rely on the respondents' ability to recall or even understand survey questions. This Media Metrix PC Meter Report Series includes the HardScan(tm) report, which covers hardware ownership, peripheral ownership and branding information data. The SoftScan(tm) reports provide software ownership information - application and system software, and the SoftUsage(tm) reports contain software usage data. Media Metrix also provides Linkage(tm) reports which combine any two of the technology reports or link with Media Metrix' World Wide Web Audience Measurement Reports. Linkage reports provide unique information on the relationships between hardware, software, media, ownership and usage. The PC Meter Report Series is derived from the Media Metrix At Home sample of 28,000 PC users. About Media Metrix Media Metrix is the recognized world leader in the field of usage measurement services for new interactive media and digital technologies.
