Tomato safety begins in Florida, Virginia.

, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has launched a multi-year Tomato Safety Initiative in Florida and Virginia Virginia, state, United States
Virginia, state of the south-central United States. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean (E), North Carolina and Tennessee (S), Kentucky and West Virginia (W), and Maryland and the District of Columbia (N and NE).

The majority of the 12 outbreaks of food-borne illnesses linked to tomatoes in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  in the past decade have been traced to products from Florida and Virginia's Eastern Shore. The initiative, part of FDA's Produce Safety Action Plan, is a collaborative effort between the agency and state health and agriculture departments in those two states. Several universities and members of the produce industry are also involved in the effort, which began during Virginia's growing season growing season, period during which plant growth takes place. In temperate climates the growing season is limited by seasonal changes in temperature and is defined as the period between the last killing frost of spring and the first killing frost of autumn, at which  this summer and will start in Florida this fall.
